Slumber Party Hell

To say that my Abigail's slumber party bombed last night is something of an understatement. This came as a complete and utter shock, considering that when I wrote about Emily's slumber party for her 7th birthday a year and a half ago I had expected the worst and was pleasantly surprised that the house didn't crash down around my ears. I followed the basic premise of the previous party: stand back and let the kids take the lead.

That was the mistake that ended in the Worst Slumber Party Experience On Record. Apparently, Spooky Stories don't always sit well with a group of 7 year old girls--not even the one who told the story.

Abigal, sufficiently creeped out by this Scary Story, ended up in my lap crying. She told me then that she wished she never had a slumber party. I spent time calming her down and Abby finally fell asleep, spending the next hour completely oblivious of the drama unfolding around her. Tucked in their sleeping bags the other girls worked themselves into a hysterical frenzy over this Scary Story and came downstairs and announced that they wanted to go home.

ALL OF THEM.

This is how, at ten thirty at night, I came to be dialing all of these girls' parents, telling them that a crisis had arisen and that their child wanted to come home. In between phone calls one of the girls repeated over and over, "I want my mommy!" ("She's on her way honey") "This house it haunted!" ("The house is not haunted") "I want to go home NOW!" (I can arrange that) and "I never want to come back here EVER AGAIN!" (I can arrange that, too. Trust me.)

My daughter, shafted by time and circumstance in having a proper party on her actual birthday, had no idea that her long awaited slumber party was dissolving around her. She would wake up wondering why only one girl remained out of the original five--incidentally the same girl who told the Scary Story in the first place (I couldn't reach her granddad).

Abby took the news this morning in stride but I can't help feeling that I've somehow let her down because her party wasn't a success. How do I make this experience up to her?

@#$%!

I know it isn't funny right now, but there WILL come a time, when you'll tell the slumber party from hell story, and everyone, even your daughter, will laugh. Someday it will make a great tale to share.
She'll forgive you, and probably forget all about it especially if you don't make too big a deal out of it. For now, I feel for you. :-)

Oh dear, that must have sucked for you. I do think it will be a good story to tell later. Reminds me of subbing grade school, all the kids want to go home with tummy aches. I learned to put trash cans by the desk and make them wait a while until it goes away. It's the age, try not to take it too personal.

I’m sure she has already forgiven you by now ;)

I always, ALWAYS, lived in fear of the 'Disasterous Sleepover'. Because, as parents, we are set up for failure by our kids when they come up with these things. Something invariably goes wrong - although not as horribly wrong as yours. At least it was akid that killed the party, and not you. I remember once, #2 Son killed his own party. After everybody left, he stood at the door, turned to me with a big smile on his face, and said, "Dad, that fart was a KILLER." Thus the reason everybody left.

girl sleep overs can be so traumatic, be thankful the evacuation was not over boys and cattyness of other girls. Kids tend to be fascinated with the scary story then have readers/listening remorse. As a parent I would have told my child they were fine and needed to tough it out but I have boys so maybe it is different with girls or maybe I am a mean mom LOL

Scary stories are just part of life. It makes us appreciate the lighter side of life. Popcorn and Charlie Brown always brought me back to a safe place when I got scared. hang in there E

Man, that party is going to be LEGENDARY in a couple of years. I've been to my share of slumber parties where I just wanted to leave. Believe me, the ones that acutally leave end up being the most embarassed.

Ohhhh, that is a bummer. How did she feel about it afterward? Was she traumatized?

Next year I would suggest NO ghost stories...heh.

I think a screening of "Bleak Future", featuring Malathion Man, would be perfect for next year's party. http://www.blockbuster.com/search/movie/movies?keyword=bleak+future

Don't blame yourself, it wasn't your fault. Seven year old's are a difficult age: still small enough to be insecure and clingy, but old enough to want to form their own opinions and ideas. Don't worry, it'll sort itself out.

Just doing a high level flyby - to see if anybody is out there, sunbathing in the backyard. Just thought I'd dip a wing and check it out. Alas...no naked bodies on display. No cloth-ed ones, either.

LOL... I couldn't help but giggle reading this... with flashbacks to a slumber party that I once went too and a scary story was told. Although I wasn't the one who told the story - I was the last girl standing in the morning. LOL!!!

And yes, in spite of all the "I'm never coming here ever again" LOL - there were many a slumber parties had at this girls place over the years.

So - no worries!
LOL... deep breathe!

I laughed at the title because I can completely relate. My Abigail had a sleepover party when she was 7 with 14 girls. It went great. they all had a blast! They loved it. This past September we tried again and failed. No one went home but they all fought all night, by 3am I got mean and yelled at them to go to bed and even Abigail said NEVER again.
